Australian Visas Through The Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has naturally resulted in a reduction of immigration to Australia. While Australia was ramping up to begin easing travel restrictions, Victoria’s second wave has slowed this process further. Currently, significantly fewer visas have been given out compared to previous years, with the majority of visas prioritised for individuals already within Australia seeking permanent visa status. Despite this, _____ l is a top immigration lawyer in Melbourne determined to help you get your Australian visa through the newly announced priority migration skilled occupation list.

Recently, the Australian Minister of Immigration has announced that Australia has begun processing a small amount of temporary migrant applications. The existing Australian skilled migration list still applies, with individuals meeting the requirements on the list being able to apply for a temporary Australian visa and receive permission to travel to the country despite the current travel ban. In addition to the existing skilled migration list, the Minister has also released a new Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL). This list will allow individuals which meet the requirements on this list to have their visa applications prioritised. As a visa lawyer, we at _____ aim to take you through the details and provide you with the information you need.

Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List

The PMSOL consists of 17 prioritised occupations. The occupations on the list mainly relate to the Healthcare, Construction, and Information Technology sectors. Visa applicants who fall under the PMSOL will have their applications fast-tracked and will be more likely to be granted entry into the country.

The 17 occupations under the PMSOL, including ANZSCO code, are:

  1. Chief Executive or Managing Director (111111)

  2. Construction Project Manager (133111)

  3. Mechanical Engineer (233512)

  4. General Practitioner (253111)

  5. Resident Medical Officer (253112)

  6. Psychiatrist (253411)

  7. Medical Practitioner nec (253999)

  8. Midwife (254111)

  9. Registered Nurse (Aged Care) (254412)

  10. Registered Nurse (Critical Care and Emergency) (254415)

  11. Registered Nurse (Medical) (254418)

  12. Registered Nurse (Mental Health) (254422)

  13. Registered Nurse (Perioperative) (254423)

  14. Registered Nurses nec (254499)

  15. Developer Programmer (261312)

  16. Software Engineer (261313)

  17. Maintenance Planner (312911)

While it is possible to do it yourself, seeking guidance from an immigration law firm will ensure you have all your documents in order and give you the best chance at success.

How the PMSOL Will Work

Visa applicants or employer-sponsored nominations for visas who hold one of the positions on the PMSOL will be fast-tracked and given priority processing. Occupations on this list, which indicate in-demand occupations within Australia, are heavily healthcare-focused in an attempt to relieve the current strain on these more high-demand professions. All other skilled occupation lists remain valid and visa applications from those professions will continue to be processed, although not at the same rate as those within the PMSOL as those will be given priority. The Minister emphasised that the occupations on the PMSOL will supercharge Australia’s health and economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those individuals who are granted an Australian visa due to occupations listed on the PMSOL will be able to request a travel exemption in order to be able to enter Australia despite the current conditions. However, they will still be required to complete a mandatory quarantine over a 14-day period. This quarantine will need to be done at their own cost.
